In this article:

Buttrose identifies climatic factors affecting flower initiation in woody perennial fruit crops as an under researched area in comparison to factors that are more amendable to experimental control.

Methods of climatic experimentation (statistical, modified natural environment and controlled environment) and difficulties associated with them are discussed.

From experiments in controlled environment light intensity and temperature are identified as having a profound effect of fruitfulness.

Potential difficulties associated with moving onto field trials are discussed.
