Discusses earlier methods of DNA fingerprinting of grapevine material using Restricted Fragment Length Polymorphism and the more recent and convenient Polymerase Chain Reaction method.

Work aimed at developing semi-automated instrumentation for the PCR method, the necessity of building a database of results, limitation for identification of clonal sections, and potential future applications for DNA based identifications is discussed.
