In this article:

Progress on the development of polymerase chain reaction DNA analysis based techniques for the identification of clonal differences is provided.

Potential use of examination double stranded RNA content for identification through differences in viral load is discussed.

Results suggest clonal selections are probably the result of selections for both improved genetic character and for modified disease status, and both factors will probably need to be taken into account in attempting to replace conventional ampelographic techniques.

In the next year it is expect the search for a genetic basis for clonal variation and relationship between virus like disease and clonal variation will be expanded, and trials of semi-automated fingerprinting procedures will begin.
