It was previous found the activity of β-1 ,3-glucan hydrolase in leaves of Nicotiana glutinosa L. increased up to 200 fold during the course of local lession infection with tobacco mosaic virus.
Other viruses also induced high activity of hydrolase in the leaves.
These results suggested that assaying leaves of grapevine (Vitis sp.) for β-1 ,3-glucanase activity might provide a faster method for detecting some virus-like infections which can currently be detected only by grafting to indicator grapevines.
This paper reports the effects of some virus and different virus-like diseases on the activity of β-1 ,3-glucanase in leaves of grapevines and some herbaceous plants commonly used to identify mechanically transmissible viruses.
