In this article:
Final report for DFRDC for project USA 005 – CSIRO and Uni of South Australia and Food Science Australia were joint research partners.
The aims of the project were to:
l. identify and quantitatively measure the quality characteristics required by various processors .
2. improve the removal of contaminants from DVF during processing and packing, with particular reference to stones, capstems, sticks, stalks and snails .
3. reduce levels of contamination of DVF during growing, drying and transport, with particular reference to stones and snails .
4. reduce the levels of damage to fruit during growing and drying to minimise the risk of stickiness .
5. develop DVF handling systems in processing, packing, transport and secondary processing to minimise further damage and to manage sticky fruit.
A communication strategy was also developed which involved regular updates on the project via Quality Talk, twice a year workshops and production of Technical Talk – all of which greatly improved communication between stakeholders.
