In this article:
Sultana rootlings infested with the root knot nematode Meloidogyne javanica (Treub) were planted in several hectares of sandy loam soil. Fumigation was applied and the nematode population studied for several years after the fumigation. Soil fumigation of planting appeared to have little effect on nematodes present in the soil before the vines were planted. C. xenoplax was most common, recorded regularly in over 90% of all samples.
The fluctuations in percentages of samples containing Meloidogyne and the persistence of effects of fumigation suggest there was little spread of this nematode and little infestation from the irrigation water.
The steady increase of Tylenchulus was probably due to repeated introductions and ready transport in the irrigation water
