In this article:

Repeatedly heavy dressings of superphosphate produced zinc deficiency and decreased yields of citrus in the Murrumbidgee Irrigation Area.

These findings suggested that zinc nutrition might be inadequate in a long term fertilizer trial on sultanas at Red Cliffs, where the yields of vines that had received annual dressings of superphosphate for 19 years were depressed.

To investigate this possibility Zinc treatments were superimposed on two long-term sultana fertilizer trials. Sultana vines at both Red Cliffs and Merbein responded in a positive but variable way to zinc application over a five year period.

No vines at either site showed obvious symptoms of zinc deficiency and yields of untreated vines were not low by district standards. Possible reasons for the variations in yield are discussed.
