Viticultural practices overseas suggested that yields of Sultana vines might be increased if shade within the canopy were lessened. But the growth habit of the two cultivars and the climatic conditions of the two viticultural regions differ to such an extent that experimental proof of this hypothesis was deemed necessary and the results of those experiments are presented here.

Mature vines were trained to form a several different canopy lengths and pruned alike. The experiment showed a trend of increasing yield as canopy length increased.

The differences in yield were due to differences in fruitful shoots/node, clusters/node and crop weight/node. It is concluded that, in Sultana, shoot crowding reduced yield and that yield increases were obtained from the vine training which reduced shoot crowding.
