A vineyard survey of plant-parasitic nematodes conducted by CSIRO Merbein in 1954-55 showed that rootknot nematode, citrus nematode and root lesion nematode were widespread.

It became obvious that rootknot nematodes, more common in soils of light texture, caused severe damage to grapevine. Field trials were established between with grafted Sultanas to test their potential to overcome nematode problems in light textured soils.

CSIRO rootstock trials show that Ramsey is the most satlsfactory rootstock for Sultanas in light soils because of its consistent field performance, a result of its nematode resistance and its potential to increase production even in virgin solis.

To utilize the full potential of these vigorous vines management systems which increase canopy size, reduce shoot crowding and are suited to light pruning techniques are required.
