In this article:
The fruitfulness of buds of canes from ten cultivars Vitis vinifera L, was measure for four consecutive winters.
Cultivars differed by as much as 20 days in the mean days to bud burst. The number of inflorescences per node differed significantly from year to year in nine cultivars.
Trends in the weight of inflorescences per node were similar to those in the number of inflorescences per node, but the differances between cultivars and variability between seasons and along the cane were greater. Number and weight of inflorescences per node were positively correlated in a significant majority of groups.
There was no significant relationship between seasonal means of inflorescence number and weight.
This system of examining bud fruitfulness could be used for the early detection of seasons of abnormally low or high yield-potential, however it is time consuming and would not give a close prediction of potential yield.
