In common with all grape varieties, crop development in Sultana is controlled by environmental factors that affect bunch number per vine and bunch weight, ie,  combination of berries per bunch and berry weight (Sommer et al. 2000).

With respect to development of the 2002 crop, high levels of sunlight and high temperatures during the period of fruit bud initiation in November-December 2000 indicated that high bud fruitfulness and hence high bunch numbers could be expected.
